Izmir entered the ranking of the top ten destination airports for German package holidaymakers with an 89% surge compared to the same month last year. Antalya maintained its strong growth with a 40% rise and defended its top position, the latest monthly figures from leading reservations provider Traveltainment showed.

In contrast, demand for Spain dropped dramatically. Palma had a 17% fall in bookings but retained second place in volume terms. This followed an 18% drop in August and a general downward trend so far this year.

Once again, the Canary Islands suffered heavy double-digit falls in bookings, continuing this year’s weaker sales. All top four destinations, Fuerteventura (-18%), Las Palmas (-18%), Tenerife (South) (-17%) and Arrecife (-11%) had fewer bookings than in September last year, indicating lower demand for the forthcoming winter season.

Hurghada (-2%) saw its first year-on-year decline for the last 12 months after very high growth rates in late 2017 and so far in 2018.

Greece also had another weak month on the German market in September. Heraklion, Crete’s main airport, was down by 13% and Rhodes dropped by 4%.

In terms of sales channels, Turkey had stronger online bookings than through travel agencies, while Majorca saw a bigger drop in travel agency sales than online.

The monthly figures for September cover package holiday and last-minute bookings through Traveltainment’s market-leading travel agency and OTA reservation systems.
