German bookings for holidays in Hurghada and Marsa Alam continued to boom in October, the latest monthly figures from leading reservations provider Traveltainment showed. The top Red Sea coast destination Hurghada had an 83% year-on-year increase in bookings last month after an 86% rise in September. Similarly, Marsa Alam further south enjoyed a 90% surge in sales following on from a 121% rise the previous month.

In contrast, the Canary Islands fell back again after an improvement the previous month. There was a 4% drop for Fuerteventura after a 9% increase in September while Las Palmas (-4%), Tenerife South (-7%) and Arrecife (-5%) all had similar declines to the previous month. Taken together, the figures for Egypt and the Canaries suggest that Germans are switching to the Red Sea for holidays this winter or next summer.

Among the big summer destinations, Palma performed well last month with a 9% rise in bookings following on from a 4% increase in September.

Greece also had another strong month on the German market. Bookings for Heraklion rose by 27%, which was the same growth rate as in September, while Rhodes was up by 45% following a 35% rise the previous month.

Demand for Turkey again declined with a 10% year-on-year fall, although this was better than the 36% fall in bookings recorded in September.
