With Germans currently booking both winter breaks and taking advantage of early booking discounts for summer 2019 packages, there were clear winners and losers in October, the latest monthly figures from leading reservations provider Traveltainment showed.

Demand for Spain remained weak as consumers switched to cheaper destinations. Bookings to Palma crashed by 33%, a dramatic worsening after a 17% fall in September and weak sales in recent months. Majorca’s airport had a (by its standards) relatively low 15% share of all bookings for the ten largest destination airports.

The Canary Islands maintained their negative trend of this year with heavy double-digit falls once again. Bookings declined for all top four destinations, Fuerteventura (-17%), Las Palmas (-16%), Tenerife (South) (-18%) and Arrecife (-15%).

The big winner in October was Antalya which grew by 39% and remained the largest single destination airport in terms of volumes (28% of bookings for the top ten airports). This followed high double-digit growth for the Turkish Riviera gateway most of this year.

After more than a year of very strong growth rates, Hurghada (-11%) saw a second successive month of negative growth, although it overtook Palma to become the second-largest airport with a 20% share. The decline was partly compensated by a 12% rise for the other major Red Sea airport, Marsa Alam.

Greece also remained in negative territory last month. Bookings to Heraklion, Crete’s main airport, dropped by 17% following a 13% decline in September. Rhodes dropped by a slight 2% in October.

The monthly figures for October cover package holiday and last-minute bookings through Traveltainment’s market-leading travel agency and OTA reservation systems.
