Bookings fell last month for nine out of the top ten destination airports for German package holidaymakers, the latest monthly figures from leading reservations provider Traveltainment showed. Overall package holiday bookings for the top ten airports dropped by 7% compared to June 2017, with a 10% decline in travel agency bookings and a 4% fall in online sales.

Notably, the price gap between booking channels narrowed significantly in June. The average price per person for a travel agency booking fell to €793 from €858 in May, while the average price of an online booking increased to €718 from €687 the previous month.

Egypt was the clear winner among the leading destinations. Bookings for Hurghada increased by a strong 39% year-on-year, with travel agency sales 25% higher and online sales up by 48%. The June figure continued a trend of high double-digit growth rates for the main Red Sea holiday destination in the first half of 2018. The southern resort of Marsa Alam also made it into the ranking of the top biggest destination airports despite an 8% fall compared to last June.

In contrast, demand for the Turkish Riviera weakened after very high growth rates in the last few months. Bookings to Antalya fell by 11%, although it remained the largest single destination airport with 29% of all bookings (for the top ten airports).

There was more pain for Spain as well. Germans continued to switch away from Majorca with bookings to Palma down by 8% in June. This was the sixth month in a row with declining numbers.

The Canary Islands suffered even more with double-digit declines. Bookings slumped for the top three destinations, Fuerteventura (-16%), Las Palmas (-24%) and Tenerife (South) (-12%), for the fifth consecutive month.

Greece also had a weak month on the German market in June. There were double-digit declines for the three main island destinations in comparison to last summer when demand was surging. Heraklion, Crete’s main airport, was down by 15%, the fourth month in a row with lower bookings. Demand also fell significantly for Rhodes (-11%) and Kos (-28%) after generally good bookings in recent months.
