The family-owned tour operator increased turnover by 7.2% to just under €1.2 billion in the year ending October 2017, while customer numbers went up by 4.4% to 1.4 million. This followed flat sales last year. Growth was driven by strong bookings for Greece (+29%), Egypt (+36%) and also the Maldives (+28%).

“With a profit margin of 3% we have achieved a very solid result,” declared managing owner Gerald Kassner. He pointed out that Air Berlin only represented 15% of the tour operator’s capacity.

For 2018, the 100th anniversary of Schauinsland-Reisen’s establishment as a regional coach travel company, Kassner is targeting further growth of 5% in customer numbers. Germany’s sixth-largest tour operator is celebrating the anniversary with “retro-look” brochures with black-and-white cover pictures under the slogan ‘100 Years Endless Summer’.

The main product innovation is expansion of the adults-only hotel portfolio to more than 200 specialised properties. In addition, the tour operator is expanding its ‘cruise & beach’ combined holidays through a partnership with MSC in addition to the existing cooperation with Aida Cruises.

Schauinsland-Reisen will keep prices largely stable next summer, although Egypt will be slightly more expensive. The tour operator has strong early bookings for Turkey thanks to higher early booking discounts. “We’re certain that Turkey will continue to recover,” said tourism director Andreas Rüttgers.
