Maltzahn will leave the group after ten years, including four years as part of the management team, “at his own wish in order to take up new career challenges,” DER Touristik said today.

The former TUI manager joined the group in 2008 as head of the hotels business and then also took over management of the ‘air-based holidays’ unit in 2010. In 2014, Maltzahn became director of DER Touristik Cologne (ITS, Jahn Reisen, Travelix) which in 2017 joined up with DER Touristik Frankfurt to become one single company, DER Touristik Germany, with six brands.

“Rolf-Dieter Maltzahn has served DER Touristik for many years. He was a guarantee of stability even in challenging years,” said René Herzog, CEO DER Touristik Central Europe. Maltzahn will not be replaced directly and his responsibilities will be reorganised within the management team.

DER Touristik’s package holiday tour operators are under-performing this year, according to fvw information. ITS, Jahn and Travelix have a single-digit fall in sales while nearly all other major German tour operators have significant growth rates and overall summer 2018 sales are well ahead of last year, according to market researchers GfK, DER Touristik also contracted more risk hotel capacity in order to be bookable later in the season. But this strategy is seemingly not paying off, even though traditionally strong DER package holiday destinations such as Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia are all making a strong comeback this year.
