Daldrup, who took over as managing director of Germany’s fifth-largest tour operator in 2016, has been with the company for more than 15 years in two separate periods. According to Alltours, he will stay until the end of 2019 as head of the travel agency business.

Explaining his decision to step down from running the tour operator business, Verhuven said: “With Markus Daldrup we are losing a well-known industry expert and highly-valued manager. He does not see his career focused on hotel procurement, which is the operational core of our tour operator business.”

The 67-year-old entrepreneur, who had stepped back from everyday business in the last few years, will take over Daldrup’s responsibilities running the tour operator business until a successor has been found. Michael Kalt, who joined the group last December as commercial director with responsibility for IT and e-commerce, will take charge of last-minute holidays unit Bye.bye and online sales.

Daldrup is the latest in a series of managers to leave the company, reportedly due to disagreements with Verhuven who founded Alltours more than 40 years ago.

Financially, Alltours is in good shape. The Düsseldorf-based group, which includes the Allsun hotels chain, improved pre-tax profits by 12.7% to about €63 million in the year ending October 2017. All of the group’s businesses improved their profits and the Allsun Hotels chain was once again “highly profitable”.

The tour operator businesses increased turnover by 4.5% to nearly €1.4 billion while customer numbers rose by 2.5% to 1.66 million from the four source markets Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
