Cendant plans European holiday home network after Novasol buy

May 14, 2002

US travel giant Cendant is planning to build up a European holiday home network after becoming the continent's largest supplier of holiday villas and cottages through its recent acquisition of Denmark's Novasol. The US group now controls 32,000 holiday homes in Europe, with 17,000 under the Novasol/Dansommer brands, 12,000 marketed through the UK's Holiday Cottages Group and a further 3,000 by Italian firm Cuendet. Cendant, which also owns CRS Galileo, Avis, time-share giant RCI and several hotel franchise chains, now plans to develop a standard booking system for its holiday homes companies, said Markus Deutsch, travel division director for Europe, Middle East and Africa. The existing brands will be retained and linked more closely to each other. Cendant was also looking closely at the French market to fill its gap there, Deutsch added. In addition, time-share subsidiary RCI, with a large number of holiday flats in Spain, could in future market its properties through the new bookings system. This would create a giant pool of holiday accommodation which consumers could bundle with seat-only tickets into their own modular holidays.
