Germany’s leading event for travel industry professionals, which regularly attracts some 2,250 participants, is returning to Cologne this year with a redesigned format. The two-day event will take place on Tuesday September 19 and Wednesday September 20.

The conference will kick off with presentations by German economics minister Brigitte Zypries, German Tourism Industry Federation president Michael Frenzel and German Travel Association president Norbert Fiebig on “the opportunities for the travel industry between sustainable economic growth and global crises”.

In keynote speeches on travel market trends, TUI Group CEO Fritz Joussen, DER Touristik Group CEO Sören Hartmann and HRS managing director Tobias Ragge will look at issues such as “new customer behaviour, technological change and international players”.

The impact of technology and the digital economy on the travel industry will be addressed by various speakers, including Amadeus Germany chief Monika Wiederhold, Telekom Germany’s head of business customers Hagen Rickmann and entrepreneur Uwe Frers.

Financial investor Jaroslaw Czernek will explain how the Czech group Rockaway Capital/Invia wants to make money as owners of the former Unister portals, while Holidaycheck Group CEO Georg Hesse and Peakwork CEO Ralf Usbeck will debate whether OTAs are outdated as international players and Google transform online travel sales.

The second day will initially focus on the airline industry, with strategy presentations by Eurowings managing director Oliver Wagner, Air Berlin’s CCO Götz Ahmelmann and TUIfly CEO Roland Keppler.

The new TUI Germany CEO Marek Andryszak will face the German travel industry for the first time in an interview session, while other speakers will explain how artificial intelligence will revolutionise tourism, and how to transform competing transport modes into a ‘networked mobility’ system.

The event will finish off with an extensive session looking at the dynamic growth of the Chinese outbound travel market with presentations by Professor Wolfgang Arlt (China Outbound Tourism Research Institute), Alessandro Dassi (Thomas Cook China) and other experts.

The accompanying Travel Expo exhibition will feature some 80 tourism suppliers and travel technology companies, along with various workshops targeted at travel agents.
