Weak sales start in 2010

German travel agents had a poor start to 2010 with weak sales in January which is normally a strong summer holiday booking month, the latest monthly survey of 2,500 agencies by the TATS organisation showed.

After closing 2009 with a 10.4% decline for the full year, overall German travel agency revenues dropped 1% last month, the survey showed. This was on the basis of the catastrophic start to 2009, which had a 13.5% slump, according to the TATS survey one year ago.

Tourism sales, which had risen 2.5% in December, were 1.8% lower last month than in January 2009. Advance sales last month for departure in the November 2009 – October 2010 tourism year showed a 3% drop in bookings and a 8.8% decline in revenues compared to last January.

This reflects the general fall in demand and lower holiday package prices. Flight ticket sales showed a 0.8% rise in January in revenue terms while the number of tickets increased by 5.6%. The difference reflects lower average prices than 12 months ago.
