Dubai claims to have launched one of the largest family promotions ever offered by a tourism destination as part of an aggressive push to boost arrivals for summer 2010. The emirate unveiled a new Kids Go Free campaign at ITB yesterday, promising free holidays for children under 16 between 14 May and 30 September. Youngsters travelling with two adults are eligible for a package of complimentary benefits, including flights on Emirates, hotel accommodation, excursions and entry to attractions, as well as a range of shopping discounts. The summer promotion follows a similar one which ran during September last year, attracting 30,000 extra visitors. Saleh Mohammed Al Geziry, director of overseas promotions for the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, hopes this longer-running promotion will succeed in attracting at least double that number. “

The last campaign was a great success for the destination and we all felt it should continue as it would be good for the summer‚” he said. Al Geziry added that the new promotion has attracted significantly more partners now that the private sector has seen the benefits of being involved. As a result, 83 hotels are offering free board‚ while a long list of attractions including Ski Dubai, the Wild Wadi water park and the Aquaventure and Lost Chambers attractions at Atlantis The Palm are offering free admission to under-16s if the accompanying adult buys a ticket. “This is not simply a cut-price promotion – it underlines our strategy of further establishing Dubai as a year-round destination and appealing to all target groups with our extensive offer,” said DTCM Germany director Mara Kaselitz.

The emirate is forging ahead with new developments in spite of its well-publicised economic woes. Several upmarket international hotel brands are due to open properties in Dubai this year. Next month‚ the Armani Hotel Dubai, the first of a new brand, will open its doors. By the end of 2010 an extra 39 hotels and apartment hotels will have added more than 18‚000 rooms to the inventory of this tourism playground. Last month witnessed the opening of Dubai’s new cruise terminal‚ Port Rashid, one of the largest in the Middle East and a testament to the emirate’s fast-growing cruise business.
