Charter airline declared insolvent
Grounded German charter airline Blue Wings has been officially declared insolvent after its German and Russian owners failed to resolve their deep differences.
The airline, which has been grounded since January 13, has declared insolvency. The German civil aviation authority had withdrawn its operating licence due to the carrier’s financial position and its seven jets have remained on the ground since then. The 250 staff did not receive any wages for December and only 50% of their pay in November.
The two owners, company manager Jörn Hellwig and Russian millionaire Alexander Lebedev, have clashed in recent weeks over who is to blame for the carrier’s collapse and each sought to buy out the other.
The court-appointed insolvency administrator Frank Kebekus announced he was optimistic that the airline would soon be able to resume operations. But it is unclear what the future ownership situation will be and where the charter airline should gain its passengers. Former major clients such as tour operator Öger Tours have long since switched capacity to other airlines, and the carrier’s image has been seriously damaged by its highly-publicised problems.
