German holidaymakers showed less interest in hotels in boom destination Bulgaria in the first half of February, according to the latest Hotelometer rankings.
There were new number ones in Bulgaria and Portugal but no changes in the leading hotels in Egypt in the fortnight from February 6 - 19, 2017, the new-look Hotelometer showed.
In Bulgaria, the Club Hotel Sunny Beach jumped to first place from third in the previous fortnight, while the HVD Clubhotel Miramar remained in second place and the Kristal Goldstrand rose to third from sixth. Although Bulgaria is generally a destination for price-sensitive holidaymakers, there is also demand for higher-value hotels such as the HVD Clubhotel Miramar and Iberostar Sunny Beach Resort (second place for family hotels).
Overall, booking enquiries for hotels in Bulgaria weakened somewhat in the first half of February. But Philipp Weiser, from data supplier Trevo Trend, explained: “The booking enquiries were at a particularly high level in the comparative period.”
In Portugal, the Algarve and Madeira dominate the top ten ranking with five hotels each. The top three – the Vila Gale in Lagos, the Alfamar Beach & Sport Resort in Praia da Falésia, and the Tivoli Marina in Portimao – are all located in the Algarve region. The Vila Gale took top place in the latest ranking, up from third place in the previous ranking, while the Alfamar dropped to second and the Tivoli moved up to third from fifth.
In Egypt, the Dana Beach Resort, the Jaz Aquamarine Resort and the Jungle Aqua Park Resort (all in Hurghada) retained the top three places in the latest ranking, while the Steigenberger Al Dau entered the top ten in fourth place.
The Hotelometer ranking, produced by fvw in cooperation with data analysis firm TrevoTrend, now covers Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Italy, Malta, Morocco, Portugal and Tunisia as well as the three long-standing destinations: Greece, Spain and Turkey.
The Hotelometer is based on reservation enquiries for hotels in popular holiday destinations but not actual bookings. It can thus be seen as a ‘demand barometer’ for specific hotels and more generally for destinations. The price per person is the average of all enquiries, regardless of the number of people per reservation enquiry and the length of stay.
The rankings are based on all enquiries in the market-leading Traveltainment reservations system used by German travel agents and online booking engines. The data is analysed by TrevoTrend and supplied exclusively to fvw in the format of the Hotelometer.
