New investments as Germans flock to Croatia

TUI and DER Touristik are opening new hotels in Croatia as the Adriatic destination enjoys soaring visitor numbers from Germany.

Croatia is one of the winners on the German tourism market this year as the country benefits from strong demand for alternative beach holiday destinations.

The number of German visitors soared by 32% in the first six months, outpacing the strong 22% rise in overall tourist arrivals. Similarly, the number of overnight stays by Germans increased by 35% to nearly five million while total overnights were 24% higher at more than 20 million.

In June alone, the number of German tourists in Croatia shot up by a dramatic 84% to more than 470,000, according to figures from the national tourist board.

Meanwhile, both TUI and DER Touristik this week announced new hotel openings in the country, which has seen a large number of hotel investments and openings in recent years.

The first TUI Blue hotel in Croatia, the TUI Blue Jadran, the seventh hotel of TUI Group’s new experience hotel brand, was opened last weekend. The 161-room 4.5-star hotel is located at Tucepi on the Makarska Riviera, south of Split in Dalmatia.

The building is considered to be the oldest hotel on the Croatian Adriatic coast. Through its lifestyle concept with stylish rooms and junior suites, TUI Blue is breathing new life into the well-known hotel with its historic façade, according to TUI.

“I am delighted that we are now complementing the TUI Blue portfolio with a hotel in Croatia. Our local Blue Guides will provide insider tips enabling the guests to gain authentic holiday experiences in the region, and we are looking forward to receiving the feedback from our first guests,” said Artur Gerber, Managing Director TUI Blue.

TUI Blue’s next growth initiative has already been announced. From the 2018 Spring season, the portfolio will be complemented by TUI Blue Rocador in Mallorca, TUI Blue Falesia in Portugal, TUI Blue Palm Beach Palace in Djerba and TUI Blue Marmaris in Turkey. These new openings will be based on appropriate hotels from TUI Hotels & Resorts’ existing portfolio, repositioned as TUI Blue hotels. Further repositionings are scheduled for the 2018/19 Winter season and the 2019 Summer season.

Meanwhile, DER Touristik will in future manage the four-star plus hotel LTI Romana Makarska, the first LTI-branded hotel in Croatia. The property owner Romana is investing €50 million in the newly-built 267-room hotel which will open in June 2018. It will be offered on the German market through group brands ITS, Jahn Reisen and Dertour.
